Letters to the Future

We know what to do. We always knew. The future will prove us right. But then it's too late. Let's bring awareness to what needs to change in the 'Now' and save ourselves and the world from what's ahead. We have the power to do it all, maybe we're just lacking an idea or inspiration to get us going. Perhaps you find exactly that somewhere between the following lines.

Good morning, hello youth of the days ahead,

The world you can see and perceive through all your senses is the result of what we have done, or more of what we haven't. We're lacking the phantasy to imagine what your life might look like. What technologies surround you, what jobs there are to do, or how the planet that gifted life to us all is left to you. We can only assume what's coming. You can already feel and live through it. Most of all our generations in the Now would want to apologize. Maybe not yet, but if we would see where our actions lead to, we'd be on our knees begging for forgiveness. It's not fair that our luxury had to be your cruelest enemy. It's also not fair, that our greatest opponent is despair. We're overwhelmed. Confused. Frightened. We flee into the realms of the internet of people, you might have heard of it, we watch other beings living their life, trying to forget our own. Trying to cope with all the fears, with all the hopelessness, with that inner hate towards our time, our people and ourselves. We are so close to giving up. We are so close to just watch, just as we always do on the internet. We sit, wait and stare as our world crumbles beneath the actions we're denying to take. Those which look too big for us. Actions that would need to change it all. But we're facing a world of money and power with nothing in our hands but good will. Despite that, everything seems to be against us. It's the golden age of western capitalism and apparently saving our planet isn't even up to debate when others try to get their money. Imagine that! Living in a world where everyone knows what going on, everyone sees what destruction it brings and everyone can imagine how bad it'll end. And while feeling endlessly small, we watch the big players and how they don't care at all. Imagine this! Starting your life already seeing the end, giving up your hopes on the future before having lived with nothing in your hand. Why bugging to work, why thinking of kids, see that we are trapped in a time that doesn't care whether we're dead or whether we're there. A world for the money, we just do our work, make others be richer and wonder 'Is that really human?', we ask with despair.

It's not us who chose catastrophe over harmony. Nobody actively did. Understand that humankind accepted things in order to profit. Money sickened our minds, ripped people and places, made us forget, ignore and blind to what could harm the own life standard. And then also see, this Smartphone of ours, it's the corpus of all evil. It takes our time, ruins or attention span, messes up our brain reward function, demolishes our creative forces and destroys our thinking. It robs us of our boredomhood, the only place we could go to be with ourselves, to understand and reflect, to grow and prosper. It took our ability of critical thinking, flooded our heads with information true and false until it all melted into non sense and unimportance. We didn't choose this, never would. We're prisoners screaming for help in a void of looniness. Our phones take it all, but still we pay the price to escape what we're supposed to call the reality of things, no, we'd prefer not living in that. And you can't run, you can't hide, it just is what it is, the only way out is in our heads, to shut them tight, to close our eyes, to think or not to think. What freedom do we got if the end is already set.

I wonder what Future would think of Now. Would they say that we have all the knowledge stored in our pockets, all the opportunities to connect with the world one swipe away. Would Future see that there was no need to worry if we just had started to act, just helped awareness to spread, just developed good morals, helped kindness to live and truth to be said. We're onto that now, we see what has to be done. Often it just misses an idea, a movement to join, the right things to be told. But we recognise ourselves in this time, we're aware that change lies in our hands and when time is ripe our phones will be nailed onto trees, our jobs will stop when money doesn't play a role, and we will find ourselves in masses on the streets longing for the stars, striving for a new life in unity with nature, with a clear vision of what world we want to leave for the generations like yours, dear Future.
